Dwight Victor Holub

Dwight Victor Holub, 63, passed away Dec. 3, 2008. He was born on Aug. 3,1945, in El Campo, to Victor and Martha Schmidt Holub. Dwight was a third generation cotton and grain farmer. Dwight married Janet Louise Hundl on June 10, 1967. He was a Catholic.

Dwight graduated from El Campo High School in 1963. In 1965, he graduated from Wharton County Junior College with honors, and in December 1967 from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Economics. Dwight was a distinguished student at Texas A & M.

Dwight served as secretary-treasurer, vice-president and president of Wharton County Electric Coop, serving as a director from 1991-2000. He was past-president of El Campo Farmers Coop and a past member of the Wharton County Farmers Union. He was active in the 1976-77 Tractor Cade of the American Agriculture Movement, traveling to Washington D.C. to fight for farmers rights.

Dwight was an active member of St. Philip Catholic Church and served in many church organizations and committees. He served on the St. Philip School Board Cemetery Committee, Church Building Committee, taught CCD for many years, and was involved with Engaged Encounter. He was a Eucharist minister and part of the RCIA program. Dwight was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was honored as KC Family of the Year in June 1988. He was also a member of SPJST, Wharton Czech Heritage Society, Wharton County 100 Club, El Campo Museum Society, and other civic organizations.

Dwight enjoyed Aggie football games and was a season ticket holder and a long time member of the 12th Man Foundation. He enjoyed deer hunting, and in later years, enjoyed watching the deer feed and taking pictures. He enjoyed the outdoors, grilling for family and friends, and especially swimming with his six grandchildren. A special joy was traveling with family and friends. Dwight had a lifelong love of learning and enjoyed reading primarily non-fiction books about World War II. As a gifted musician who enjoyed his saxophone, he played in various polka bands at weddings and church picnics.

Dwight is survived by his mother; his wife; his son Wayne Holub and wife Lisa and their children, Colton, Cade, and Cambrey of Friendswood; daughter, Lori Janak and husband Monty and their children, Morgan, Emma, and Mitchell of Angleton; sister, Patricia Dybala of El Campo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dwight was preceded in death by his father, Victor William Holub, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Molly Hundl.

Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. today, Dec. 4, at Triska Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

Pallbearers are Delbur Swanson, Paul Soechting, Blake and Bruce Lauritsen, Paul Bruton, Jared Dybala, Mark Bures, and Brad Bacak.

Honorary pallbearers are his godchildren, Jef Patty, Leslie Strnadel, Lea Swanson Eiland, Emily Hundl Lyles, Jared Dybala, Holly, Trey and Callie Hundl.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Philip's Catholic School or St. Philip's Building Fund.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Maria Rodriguez, his lymphoma doctor of 9 years at M.D. Anderson Hospital, and Father Gary Janak.
